“AIS” LLC owns and manages the Akhalkalaki HPP in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Akhalkalaki Municipality. The largest shareholders of the project are Caucasus Celan Energy Holding (CCEH) and Landsvirkjun Power (“LVP”).

Caucasus Clean Energy Holding (CCEH) is an international investment holding company that was founded in 2015 and has been successfully operating in the Georgian market since then. The investors of the Holding are well-known financial institutions from various western countries of the EU and the US.

Landsvirkjun Power (“LVP”), Iceland’s largest state-owned power company, also made a significant contribution to the development of the hydroelectric power plant. The Akhalkalaki HPP project is LVP’s first investment outside of Iceland.

The construction of the HPP started in September 2020 and run into operation in November 2022. The installed capacity of Akhalkalaki HPP is 9.1 Megawatt.

Akhalkalaki HPP

Akhalkalaki HPP (Akhalkalaki 1 HPP and Akhalkalaki 2 HPP) is a run-of-river HPP located on the Paravani river and its right tributary, the Korkhi river in Samtskhe Javakheti region, Akhalkalaki municipality.

Akhalkalaki HPP consists of two schemes. Each scheme consists of intakes, naturalized fish passes, buried penstocks, and a powerhouses.

The installed capacity of the Akhalkalaki HPP is 9.1 Megawatt (Akhalkalaki 1 HPP – 7.5 Megawatt and Akhalkalaki 2 HPP – 1.6 Megawatt) and its annual generation amounts to 49 Gigawatt-hour. The generated electricity is transmitted via a 35 kiloVolt overhead and cable transmission line to the national grid.
